Basics (21)

What is the difference between Flameproof (Ex d) and Explosion-proof?

In Indian standards (IS/IEC 60079-1), 'Flameproof' (Ex d) means the enclosure can contain an internal explosion without igniting the surrounding hazardous atmosphere, cooling escaping gas across controlled flame paths.

What is the importance of Cast Aluminium Alloy LM6 in flameproof equipment?

LM6 alloy offers exceptional resistance to atmospheric corrosion and chemical attack, combined with superior mechanical strength to withstand internal explosion pressures.

What does IP66 rating signify for flameproof equipment?

IP66 means the enclosure is dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets, so it can be hosed down outdoors, provided the gaskets, glands and cable entries are fitted and maintained correctly.

Which gas groups are covered by Electra Automation products?

Our standard inventory covers Gas Group IIA (Propane/Industrial) and Gas Group IIB (Ethylene/Pharma). Custom Group IIC (Hydrogen) solutions are built upon request.

What is the significance of Temperature Class T6?

T6 is the most restrictive temperature class. The maximum surface temperature of the enclosure stays at or below 85°C under its rated conditions, which suits atmospheres containing gases with a low ignition temperature.

Are all products supplied with test certificates?

Yes, every batch is supplied with official CIMFR / PESO test certificates compliant with IS/IEC 60079-1:2007 standard.

Can I request custom cable entries in Flameproof Junction Boxes?

Yes, we custom drill ET, Metric, or NPT threaded entries and supply matching Ex-certified brass double compression cable glands.

What is the lead time for standard items vs custom flameproof panels?

Standard items like Well Glass LEDs, Exhaust Fans, and Junction Boxes are available in ready stock for same-day dispatch. Custom panels take 7–10 days.

How do Flameproof Clean Room LED Lights maintain room vacuum seal?

Our Clean Room lights feature a precision-machined flush mounting frame with high-grade silicone sealing gaskets that preserve clean room positive/negative pressure differential.

Why are mechanically interlocked plugs and sockets mandatory in Zone 1?

Mechanical interlocking ensures power cannot be switched on until the plug is fully inserted, and the plug cannot be removed while powered, eliminating electrical sparks.

How do I calculate required wattage for flameproof LED replacement?

As a rule of thumb, a 30W Flameproof LED replaces a 70W HPSV, a 60W LED replaces a 150W HPSV, and a 90W/120W LED replaces a 250W metal halide lamp.

How do I request a technical datasheet PDF from Electra Automation?

You can click 'Request Datasheet' inside our Assistant Bot or fill out the quotation request form with your required items to receive instant spec sheets.

What does Ex d mean on a marking plate?

Ex means explosion-protected equipment and d means flameproof enclosure: the housing can withstand an internal explosion and stop it igniting the outside atmosphere. The rest of the marking (for example IIB T6 Gb) gives gas group, temperature class and protection level.

What is the difference between Zone 0, Zone 1 and Zone 2?

Zone 0 has an explosive gas atmosphere continuously or for long periods, Zone 1 has it likely in normal operation, and Zone 2 has it unlikely and only for short periods. Dust zones use 20, 21 and 22 in the same way.

What do gas groups IIA, IIB and IIC mean?

They rank gases by how easily an explosion can pass through small gaps. IIA covers propane, petrol and ethanol type gases, IIB covers ethylene, and IIC covers hydrogen and acetylene. Equipment rated for a higher group can be used for lower groups.

What is a temperature class such as T6?

It is the maximum surface temperature the equipment reaches in service. T1 allows 450 C, T4 135 C, T5 100 C and T6 85 C. The surface must stay below the auto-ignition temperature of the gas present.

What is the difference between Ex d, Ex e and Ex i?

Ex d contains an explosion inside a strong enclosure. Ex e (increased safety) prevents sparks and hot spots from occurring. Ex i (intrinsic safety) limits circuit energy so it cannot ignite gas, and Ex ia is allowed in Zone 0.

Can Ex d equipment be used in Zone 0?

No. Ex d is intended for Zone 1 and Zone 2. Zone 0 normally needs intrinsically safe (Ex ia) or similarly certified equipment.

Can Ex d equipment be used in Zone 2?

Yes, Zone 1 equipment is generally suitable for Zone 2 as well. Ex d can be more than Zone 2 needs, so check cost against simpler Zone 2 options such as Ex e or Ex nA.

What is flameproof (Ex d) lighting?

Flameproof lighting is housed in a strong enclosure that contains an internal explosion and stops it igniting the gas outside, so it is safe in Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas.

Where is flameproof lighting used?

It is used in refineries, pharma solvent areas, chemical plants, distilleries, paint units, fuel stations and other places where flammable vapour can collect.

Standards (6)

What is IS/IEC 60079-1?

It is the standard for equipment protection by flameproof enclosures d. It sets construction, flame-path gap and test rules, including overpressure and explosion-transmission tests.

Which bodies approve flameproof equipment in India?

Testing and certification are carried out by recognised laboratories such as CIMFR, and statutory use in licensed premises is overseen by PESO. Requirements change, so confirm current rules with PESO or your consultant.

What is IECEx and does it apply in India?

IECEx is an international certification scheme for equipment in explosive atmospheres. It is widely recognised by multinational plants, but Indian statutory approval may still be needed alongside it.

What is ATEX and is it required in India?

ATEX is the European Union directive for equipment in explosive atmospheres and is mandatory only in the EU. Indian sites use Indian and IEC based approvals, though export projects may need ATEX or IECEx.

IP66 or IP67: which do I need?

IP66 is dust-tight and withstands powerful water jets, which suits most plant areas. IP67 also survives temporary immersion, so choose it for flood-prone or submerged locations.

What is the difference between the Zone system and Class/Division?

IEC and Indian practice use Zones 0, 1 and 2. North American practice uses Class I Division 1 and 2. They are not identical, so do not swap equipment between systems without checking the certificate.

Selection (6)

How do I choose a flameproof luminaire for Zone 1?

Confirm the zone, gas group, temperature class, ambient temperature, ingress protection and enclosure material. Then match lumen output and mounting type, and ask for the certificate before ordering.

Why choose LED over HPSV or fluorescent in hazardous areas?

LEDs run cooler, so T6 ratings are easier, they last far longer, and they cut maintenance entry into the hazardous area. Energy use is also much lower.

LM6 aluminium or stainless steel enclosure?

LM6 aluminium is lightweight, strong and cost effective for most areas. Stainless steel suits corrosive, marine or washdown environments, though it is heavier and costlier.

Do exhaust fans for hazardous areas need special motors?

Yes. The motor must be Ex d certified for the zone and gas group, and the impeller and guard should be non-sparking and clear of the casing.

Which gas group applies to hydrogen, ethanol, hexane or petrol?

Hydrogen and acetylene are IIC. Ethylene is IIB. Ethanol, hexane, petrol and propane are generally IIA. Your safety data sheet and area classification drawing give the final answer.

How do I choose the right flameproof fitting?

Match the zone, gas group (IIA, IIB or IIC) and temperature class (T6 is the safest) to the substances in your area, then pick wattage and mounting. Our Product Finder and team can help.

Installation (4)

Why must flameproof covers never be left loose or damaged?

The machined flame path cools escaping gases. A missing bolt, gap, scratch or paint on the joint can let a flame out, so all fasteners and joints must be intact.

How often should flameproof equipment be inspected?

IEC 60079-17 describes initial, periodic and sample inspections. The interval depends on your risk assessment, environment and equipment condition, commonly with visual checks more often than detailed ones.

Can I paint or grease a flameproof enclosure?

External paint should be thin and never on the flame path. Use only a non-setting grease approved by the manufacturer on joints, not ordinary grease.

Does flameproof equipment need earthing?

Yes. Provide the internal earth terminal and the external earth point, connected with the correct conductor size, to keep exposed metal at earth potential.

Cables (5)

Which cable glands are used with Ex d equipment?

Ex d certified compression glands matched to the cable type and the enclosure entry thread. Armoured cables need glands that grip the armour, and some installations call for barrier glands.

What is a conduit seal or stopping box?

It is a fitting that blocks flame and gas travelling along conduit or cable runs into other areas. It is used where wiring leaves a hazardous zone or enters an enclosure.

How do I test insulation resistance in a hazardous area?

Isolate and lock out, confirm the area is gas-free with a permit, then use a megger (commonly 500 V or 1 kV DC). Accept values set by your project specification or manufacturer.

What cable insulation suits hazardous areas?

Armoured cables with flame-retardant, low-smoke insulation such as FRLS or XLPE are common. Choose by voltage, fire performance and chemical exposure, and follow your consultant.

Do heaters and heat-tracing in hazardous areas need certification?

Yes. Heating cables and heaters must carry Ex certification with a temperature class that stays below the ignition temperature of the gas.

General (1)

What does a good hazardous area supplier provide?

Test certificates for every batch, datasheets with the Ex marking, spare parts and technical help in selecting by zone and gas group.
